Peningkatan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi berdampak sangat besar terhadap kehidupan manusia. Kemajuan teknologi membuat taraf hidup manusia menjadi semangkit meningkat. Namun, semakin tinggi tingkat ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi yang dapat dicapai manusia, semakin besar pula tantangan dan permasalahan terhadap teknologi tersebut. Sehingga manusia akan selalu dituntut untuk menyelesaikan masalah tersebut demi kesempurnaan teknologi yang mereka buat. Di sisi lain, kepedulian manusia terhadap lingkungan, hewan dan tumbuhan, memberikan keuntungan tersendiri bagi manusia. Banyak teknologi manusia yang dibuat berdasarkan desain dan perilaku dari hewan dan tumbuhan tersebut. Selain itu, muncul ilmu pengetahuan baru yang terinspirasi oleh perilaku hewan tersebut. Dengan ilmu tersebut, beberapa permasalahan teknologi dapat diselesaikan. Dalam penelitian ini, akan disajikan kecerdasan buatan yang terinspirasi oleh perilaku semut (Ant Colony Optimization), sekumpulan ikan (Particle Swarm Optimization) dan perilaku kunang-kunang (Firefly Algorithm) dalam menyelesaiakan permalahan dalam sistem pembangkit tenaga listrik, khususnya di peralatan power system stabilizer (PSS) dari suatu pembangkit listrik tenaga uap.
