THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL COMPARISON AND ONLINE SELF-PRESENTATION IN TEENAGE BOYS USING INSTAGRAM FILTERS

Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between social comparison (upward social comparison and downward social comparison) with online self-presentation in teenage boys using Instagram filters. This study used a quantitative correlation approach with the sampling technique used as a convenience sampling technique. 115 teenage boys using Instagram filters participated in this study and filled out a research questionnaire via a google form. The instruments used in this research are The Upward and Downward Appearance Comparison Scale (UDACS) to measure social comparison and The Presentation of Online Self Scale (POSS) to measure online self-presentation. Correlation test was performed using Pearson's product moment method. This study's results indicate a positive relationship between social comparisons with online self-presentation in teenage boys using Instagram filters with a correlation coefficient of 0.589. Then on the two dimensions of social comparison, a correlation test was conducted separately showing that there is a positive relationship between upward social comparison with online self-presentation in teenage boys using Instagram filters with a correlation coefficient of 0.567. There is a positive relationship between downward social comparison with online self-presentation in teenage boys using Instagram filters with a correlation coefficient of 0.447. This study also show that 86.1% of teenage boys who are participants in this study used aesthetic filters as a means of self-presentation on Instagram.
