Angka pertumbuhan kepemilikan kendaraan bermotor masyarakat DKI Jakarta beserta kota-kota satelit penyokongnya terus menanjak setiap tahunnya. Ketersediaan lahan yang relatif tetap menyebabkan peningkatan kapasitas jalan baik dalam bentuk pelebaran maupun penambahan panjang jalan hanya menjadi solusi praktis temporal terhadap masalah kemacetan. Bahkan hanya akan menjadi faktor yang akan memacu pertumbuhan kendaraan bermotor. Solusi terbaik adalah dengan perbaikan dan pembangunan angkutan umum, termasuk sistem transit cepat berskala massal, yang menjadi strategi selanjutnya ternyata terhalang faktor kenyamanan, keamanan, privasi dan fleksibilitas pergerakan. Hal tersebut kemudian menyebabkan kendaraan pribadi tetap unggul sebagai moda transportasi. Berangkat dari fakta di atas, selanjutnya disadari akan keperluan pengembangan transportasi yang didasarkan pada pengembangan yang berkelanjutan berdasarkan perencanaan jangka panjang yang komprehensif dengan wawasan lingkungan. Dibutuhkan sinergi antar sebaran pusat kegiatan perkotaan dengan sistem transportasi yang melayaninya sehingga Kawasan Berorientasi Transit menjadi salah satu solusi terbaik. Kajian ini mengambil studi kasus Kawasan GOR Sumantri DKI Jakarta dengan keberagaman tata guna lahan yang memiliki potensi sangat besar untuk menjadi Kawasan Berorientasi Transit. Untuk mengoptimalkan potensi yang ada, kemudian dikaji karakter perjalanan commuter yang transit di kawasan ini dengan menggunakan Matriks Asal Tujuan. Didapat data melalui survei kuesioner sebanyak 857 responden untuk kajian ini. Pada akhir analisis kajian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa kawasan GOR Sumantri sangat sesuai untuk menjadi Kawasan Berorientasi Transit dengan simpul sedang berkonsep urban yang bercirikan angka komersial yang tinggi, pemukiman padat yang terdiri dari perkantoran, pusat perbelanjaan yang besar dan terletak tidak jauh dari titik transit utama.
