Teknologi penyiaran dalam sebuah perusahaan telekomunikasi berbasis
layanan televisi (TV) terus berkembang dari waktu ke waktu seiring
perkembangan teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK). Perubahan ini
dapat dilihat pada layanan TV analog yang berkembang ke TV digital,
kemudian berkembang juga ke arah layanan TV berbasis internet
protocol. Saat ini teknologi Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) juga
sudah makin diperkenalkan sebagai salah satu pilihan yang menarik,
baik bagi pengguna (user/costumer) dan pelaku industri (businessman).
Menarik bagi user antara lain karena teknologi IPTV mampu
menyediakan layanan multimedia TV yang lebih interaktif sehingga user
dapat berkomunikasi timbal-balik secara real time melalui pesawat
televisi standar setelah terhubung dengan sebuah penyedia content.
Pilihan content ini pun dapat dilakukan sesuai kesukaan tanpa batas
waktu. Sementara bagi pengusaha, hal ini dapat menjadi suatu lahan
baru untuk mengembangkan bisnis telekomunikasi guna meningkatkan
pendapatan (revenue) dan pertambahan nilai bisnis (business value
added) pada sebuah perusahaan. Di sejumlah negara maju, teknologi
IPTV sudah diterapkan sebagai suatu layanan bisnis telekomunikasi
yang dapat memberikan kepuasan bagi user/costumer dan dapat
meningkatkan pendapatan perusahaan. Sementara di Indonesia belum
begitu populer dan berkembang dengan baik. Sebab IPTV berhadapan
tantangan antara lain ketidakmampuan sumber daya, pengetahuan
masyarakat yang terbatas, layanan internet yang belum maksimal, dan
permasalahan lainnya. Penelitian ini untuk membahas analisa kelayakan
perencanaan penerapan teknologi IPTV untuk meningkatkan nilai bisnis
perusahaan, dengan studi kasus pada PT.First Media Tbk, menggunakan
teori pemodelan Porter’s 5 Forces.
