Abstract

The Self-Critical Rumination Scale (SCRS) measures the tendency for maladaptive repetitive thinking focused on one’s perceived flaws and failures. This study aimed to adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Indonesian version of the SCRS. A comprehensive review reveals a lack of prior research dedicated to assessing the psychometric properties of the SCRS specifically for engineering students. Total participants of this study were 181 engineering students from Diponegoro University (119 males and 62 females; M= 18.5, SD= 0.79). The scale demonstrated good reliability (Cronbach’s α = 0.88). The confirmatory factor analysis supported a single-factor structure with acceptable factor loadings ranging from 0.50 to 0.79 and satisfactory model fit indices (CFI = 0.94, RMSEA = 0.06). To assess convergent validity, the SCRS was correlated with the Emotion Reactivity Scale (ERS), revealing a strong positive correlation (r = 0.688, p < .001, 95% CI [0.62, 1.00]), indicating that higher self-critical rumination is associated with greater emotional reactivity. Overall, the Indonesian SCRS demonstrates satisfactory reliability and validity for assessing self-critical rumination among young adults. Future studies should investigate its measurement invariance across genders and diverse populations, and explore longitudinal relationships with emotional regulation and mental health outcomes.
