Telepon seluler dan internet memiliki dampak yang besar dalam masyarakat sejak diperkenalkan pada tahun 1990-an. Penggunaan ponsel telah mengalami pertumbuhan yang drastis. Ponsel, yang awalnya ditujukan untuk
mobilitas layanan teleponi, dengan perkembangan penting dalam teknologi, mampu pula mengirimkan berbagai jenis data (multimedia). Penetrasi smartphone di dunia meningkat secara signifikan, dan terutama sekali kawasan Asia Pasifik telah muncul sebagai pendorong penting di balik pertumbuhan ini.
Salah satu kemajuan teknologi terpenting yang ditawarkan oleh sistim seluler LTE adalah kecepatan transfers data yang sangat tinggi. Ada tiga hal penting yang menyebabkan kapasitas yang tinggi ini, gambar 2. Yang pertama
adalah penggunaan sistim multi antenna (Multiple Input Multiple Output/MIMO), yang kedua penggunaan sistim modulasi yang tinggi, misalnya 256 QAM, yang menawarkan kecepatan dengan factor 8x lebih cepat dari modulasi
dasar, dan teknologi yang paling anyar, yaitu agregasi sinyal pembawa (carrier aggregation/CA), yang menggabungkan beberapa sinyal pembawa untuk satu penggunan.
