Abstract

Abstract-- Dry organic waste has the potential to be utilized as maggot feed; however, it requires a specific particle size to ensure optimal consumption and nutrient absorption. The recommended feed size for maggots is approximately ±1 cm, making a shredding process necessary. This study aims to design, manufacture, and test a gravity-based dry organic waste shredding machine for maggot feed. The design innovation is achieved by positioning the electric motor and shaft vertically, allowing the material to utilize gravitational force for continuous shredding. The machine is designed using a 0.5 HP electric motor with a pulley and V-belt transmission system. Testing was conducted with waste mass variations of 500 g, 1000 g, and 1500 g. The observed parameters included shredded particle size, shredding time, yield, and actual shredding capacity. The results show that the machine is capable of producing an average particle size of 1 cm, with an average yield of 89.59% and an average shredding capacity of 171.84 g/min. These results indicate that the designed shredder is effective as a supporting tool for providing maggot feed from dry organic waste.
