Women ‘s Experiences of Pornography Consumption in Early Adulthood

Abstract


Pornography use among young adult women is understudied, as most research focuses on men and female sexuality remains culturally sensitive. This study was guided by the hypothesis that women’s pornography consumption emerges from interactions between emotional regulation needs, digital exposure, and gendered moral norms. Using a phenomenological approach, five women aged 18–25 participated in semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Findings show that consumption typically began with curiosity or accidental exposure and developed into habitual use reinforced by coping functions. Participants reported guilt, intrusive thoughts, emotional instability, moral conflict, and disruptions in academic and relational functioning. Sociocultural and religious expectations intensified distress and shaped negative self-evaluation. The study also identified recovery processes involving emotional reflection and identity reconstruction, extending beyond traditional addiction models. These findings highlight the need for gender-sensitive psychoeducation and psychological services responsive to women’s emotional and cultural contexts.
