Abstrak

This study explored the psychosocial challenges and coping strategies of mothers caring for adolescents with mental health disorders in Purwokerto. Using an exploratory qualitative design, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven participants, and thematic analysis identified five caregiving challenges—strained family relationships, stigma, time constraints, emotional distress, and low public awareness—and five coping strategies, including social support, emotional regulation, religious practices, and recreational activities. Despite facing significant burdens, caregivers demonstrated resilience through adaptive strategies. Theoretically, the findings extend Caregiver Burden Theory and Stress and Coping Theory by showing how burden and coping are interrelated in the daily realities of caregiving within a Southeast Asian cultural context, particularly in Purwokerto. Practically, the study underscores the need for caregiver-focused interventions, stigma reduction campaigns, workplace flexibility policies, and culturally sensitive support systems to strengthen resilience and improve adolescent mental health outcomes.
